| | | | | | | | Posted: | Sep 29, 2017-12:51 AM | | | By: | Preston Neal Jones(Member) | Hefner was a great friend to classic films, contributing untold dollars to restoring Laurel & Hardy shorts, Basil Rathbone Holmes movies, a Bing Crosby musical, etc., etc. *** Always loved that Cy Coleman "Playboy's Penthouse" theme, a close cousin to another great 50's jazz tune, "Like Young," by Andre Previn. *** Can't remember the details, but I seem to recall that Hefner vetoed Peter Bogdanovich's original casting choice to portray him in the movie about the murdered Playmate, so they gave the part to Cliff Robertson. Bogdanovich's original actor? Harry Dean Stanton.

Bogdanovich's original actor? Harry Dean Stanton. Cliff Robertson played Hefner in 1983's STAR 80. Bob Fosse wrote and directed that film, which was produced by Wolfgang Glattes and Kenneth Utt, so I'm not sure why Peter Bogdanovich would have had any say in the casting. Bogdanovich, who intended to marry Dorothy Stratten at the time of her murder, was opposed to the film, saying Fosse “didn’t know the true story.” In fact, Bogdanovich, who was in the process of writing a biography of Stratten, refused to lend his name to the project and threatened a lawsuit if he found his onscreen counterpart, “Aram Nicholas” (played by Roger Rees) to be objectionable. A news item in the 30 April 1982 Daily Variety speculated that Harry Dean Stanton would be cast as Hefner. Six weeks later, however, the 15 June 1982 Hollywood Reporter noted that Robertson was researching the role during visits to Hefner’s mansion. The 27 October 1983 Los Angeles Herald Examiner reported Hefner’s disappointment with the completed film, which he described as “too shallow.” Peter Bogdanovich told the 13 November 1983 Los Angeles Times that his opinions of the film would appear in his upcoming book, "The Killing of the Unicorn: Dorothy Stratten, 1960-1980," which was published in 1984. No legal action against the production has been determined.

Based on the 1981 Pulitzer Prize-winner and directed by Oscar, Emmy and Tony Award-winner Bob Fosse ("Cabaret," "All That Jazz"), this is the gripping true story of Dorothy Stratten, a rising young star and Playboy Playmate of the Year who was tragically murdered by her estranged husband, the small-time hustler who discovered her. Academy Award-nominee Mariel Hemingway ("Personal Best," TV's "Civil Wars") stars with Eric Roberts ("Final Analysis," "The Specialist"), who garnered a Golden Globe nomination for his role as the volatile husband, and Academy Award-winner Cliff Robertson as Playboy magnate Hugh Hefner. The New York Post calls this stylish film "one bruising blockbuster of a motion picture... powerful, harrowing, deeply affecting... unforgettable."

But more like I have some difficulty reconciling what Playboy as a "thing" meant to me as a boy (indeed, to any boy in the civilized world), with the adult awareness of how he made his fame and fortune. Well, I can only hope that some percentage of the countless young ladies upon whose backs he built his empire knew that their objectification and exploitation could be of some benefit to them, themselves, too. (Frankly, Playboy usually bored me and I found the articles and reviews of hi-fi gear to be of more interest. That's how much of an audio geek I was/am.) Regardless, RIP. You mean like every other corporation that exploits their employees?

Point taken, but when I worked on the loading dock I was never promised to be made a star if I wiggled my man-parts at the delivery trucks. (Not that I wouldn't have if I was only asked.)

I had a hunch I might be getting some of my facts wrong, but ya know, some days you're just too tired and worn out to go Googling before imparting your wisdom. Anyhow, thanks again for setting the record straight -- and for confirming the part I got right, about the Stanton/Robertson casting switcheroo. *** Good to know about COMBO!, because I've got it in my collection. I aways said that that Mancini sure knew a good tune when he heard one.

You mean like every other corporation that exploits their employees? My main beef with HH was his glorification of consumerism. certainly NOT any supposed exploitation of women!

Stopped reading after the first sentence. He was not a pornography. Get back to me when they get their facts straight. Further more women willingly became Playboy models. Being treated badly at the workplace is common at any big organization in the US. (Not to mention US slave labor in third world countries) Playboy organization isn't an outlier.
