Last night and this morning, I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by individuals with mobility issues living on the streets. We distributed vital mobility aids and blessing bags with essential items, but it's clear that more needs to be done. Accessible shelters and housing are not just a nicety, they're a necessity. Let's build communities that welcome everyone, regardless of mobility. Accessible homes benefit not just people with disabilities but also their friends and family who want to visit without barriers. The third aspect of the 2024 Budget from a disability lens we will take a look at are the initiatives for Safe housing.Homelessness impacts every community in Canada but a disproportionate of our homeless population are those living with a disability. The Federal budget proposes $4 Billion through Reaching Home, Canada’s Homelessness Strategy. Very disturbing article re increasing #homelessness in mid-sized #cities. We write many #homeless services #grants, including in #rural areas. The #housingfirst model might work better in smaller cities and rural areas than it does in big cities b/c the cost of building #supportivehousing should be much lower.

At the Housing Advise Support Team (HAST) from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Roadshow catching up with Local Authorities on their progress with Homelessness Reduction Act #HRA, Temporary Accommodation, Youth Homelessness, Offender Accommodation and Resettlement for the new arrivals (refugees)Interesting conversations and not too surprising statistics about the challenges faced by this sector. The very high TA figures, the breach of the no family placed in B&B longer than 6 weeks rule, the ver low numbers of move on options from TA, the increasing complexities of the support needs of singles and families approaching with housing situations.
